The poetic gloss derives from Keats’s “Ozymandias”, but suggests that the abandoned, vain gesture has been repositioned in the atomic age. Something similar is suggested in the screenplay of “Planet of the Apes” (1968) where, in the final scene, the Statue of Liberty is found abandoned in the sand.
